Many are turning to Lemmy as a viable Reddit alternative. Here is how to use your existing Mastodon account with Lemmy.

Reddit exodus - Using Lemmy from my existing Mastodon

By now most of you have probably heard about Reddit blackout/exodus and you may also have heard about Lemmy, a Fediverse alternative to Reddit, which many have flocked to.

So like many people right now, I wanted to check out Lemmy as a viable alternative to Reddit, and also, like many existing Mastodon users I'm thinking:

Do I need to create a new Lemmy account on another instance, or can I just use my existing Mastodon account to do everything on Lemmy?

As an avid Fediverse user, my primary identity is on a Mastodon server.  Since Lemmy uses ActivityPub, I thought that maybe I can just cross post into Lemmy (just like I would cross post into another Mastodon instance) despite it being a quite different type of app (basically like Fediverse Reddit vs Fediverse Twitter).

It turns out... It works!!

Yes, it's possible to upvote, post, reply and follow anything on Lemmy, through my existing Mastodon account, using the same cross posting method you would between different Mastodon instances, with a few notes:

  • Mastodon Favorites are counted as Lemmy Upvotes (however Mastodon Boosts do NOT seem to count).
  • Creating a Mastodon post while mentioning a Lemmy community/topic will create a discussion post within the Lemmy Community, with the first line of the Mastodon post becoming the discussion post's title.

No it is not possible nor necessary to log into another server to post into it. Remember, just like cross-posting between different Mastodon servers, you do not need to log into another server using your existing Mastodon account, and the same applies to Lemmy servers. It can take some time to get your head around this, as we are normally used to siloed apps where you actually need to log into the other app using your existing account to do anything. This is the Fediverse, so it works little differently, and actually its simpler once you get used to it. Since all these apps are built on the same protocol (ActivityPub), they can all talk to each other directly, although the information is presented in different ways in different apps.

Performing Actions on Lemmy via Mastodon

Here are some longer instructions for various actions:

  • Browsing Lemmy groups: works without logging in, directly on the Lemmy instance.
  • Replying to a Lemmy post/comment: Get the direct link to the Lemmy post/comment using the link button in Lemmy, paste it into your logged in Mastodon instance search bar, and then press Reply and post your reply.
  • Upvote a post or comment: I again get the direct link to the Lemmy discussion or comment and paste into my Mastodon instance search bar, then I click the Mastodon favorite button (note that this might not be as private as using an actual Lemmy account to upvote).
  • Follow a Lemmy account, post or group: again just get its Lemmy link, paste into your Mastodon search field and follow.
  • Post a new discussion to a community: you simply create a new post in Mastodon, and @ mention the Lemmy group you want to post into, where the first line will become the title of the post. An example. The easiest way is to again paste the link to the group in Mastodon, and go to that groups profile and click the 3 dots menu and click Mention.
A Mastodon post I made on the left, and how it shows up in the Lemmy instance on the right. Note my Favorite shows up as an Upvote in Lemmy.

Limitations:

  • Downvotes are possible on most Lemmy servers, however I have yet to find a way to place a downvote via Mastodon.

A bit Clunky? This should improve soon...

Currently it requires copy and pasting links, the same as manually cross-posting between Mastodon instances when you don't have a browser extension like FediAct installed.  Extensions like FediAct embed buttons into foreign Mastodon pages which invisibly automates the copy/pasting for a completely seemless experience across instances.

Rest assured, given the latest spike in interest in Lemmy, it is likely the community will respond with a similar browser extension which will eliminate the manual copy/paste steps by embedding buttons into Lemmy pages.  Stay tuned, as I will update this post once I find an extension to simply things.

Forget paying for Twitter verification ticks, get truly verified online with cryptographic Identity Proofs.

Actually get 'verified' ☑️ - Decentralized Identity Proofs

How do we protect ourselves against being fooled by fake online social media accounts and conversely prove to the others that our account is the real deal?

Twitters rather limited solution is simply to make users buy a blue tick next to their name. Does having a blue verified badge next your name on a siloed platform seriously mean you are the real deal?  Given that anyone can get a badge just by buying it makes it a pretty weak way to verify.

On top of that, just because someones Twitter is verified, how do we additionally know their other true accounts that belong to the same person elsewhere?  YouTube, Reddit, website, email, Telegram etc.  YouTube and others have their own separate verification.  Who knows how many other siloed services will want you to pay to get weak verification by a centralized authority.  Not to mention that it is hard to create a private "avatar" identity, as some platforms will ask for a lot of information including a phone number and billing info, and the platform can take away verification any time.

Ultimately a more powerful approach is a Decentralized Identity Proof

And we can make it proven using cryptography (and no, we DO NOT need any "blockchain" or "Web3/4/5/6" to achieve any this either!)

Based on the same old tech that has existed for decades (OpenPGP public/private key encryption 🔐), there are ways you can create a verified online identity, proven beyond doubt - including the option to be either under your real name OR a privacy-preserving avatar of your creation.

DIY Profile website

Lets start with a simple but less trustworthy method which doesn't actually need any cryptography: build your own website and post your profile there, with the links to all your siloed accounts.  Basically like posting a bunch of social badges on your website - much like what I do at the top bar of this website (just for convenience, but not real proof as we will see later).

Here is one example of a person called 'Chuso' who posts their account links on their own dedicated profile page:

Chuso's DIY profile page with all of their links. This is just a random person I found online who makes for a great example for this blog post!

This is nice, but is this completely trustworthy?  Technically, anyone could create their own website, and post links to anyone's various siloed accounts and fraudulently claim them for their own! Is there a way to verify ownership of the accounts listed in this page?

Keybase

One way to have a profile page that is truly verified beyond doubt, is to use cryptographic identity proofs.  This involves generating private and public keys, and then using the public key to prove that a certain account, email address, website etc belongs to the same person.  One of the easiest ways for anyone to do this is to create a free profile on Keybase and then link all of your siloed accounts from there.  Keybase has ways to verify ownership of many types of accounts using your key.

Luckily 'Chuso' also has a Keybase account, so we can go there and verify whether the same person actually owns all the accounts that they have listed on their self-made profile website:

Chuso's Keybase profile, strongly confirming they own the website, Github and Twitter accounts

Again, this verification is done using cryptographic keys, NOT by paying someone money!  So it is more trustworthy, meaningful and cannot be easily taken away (well.. as long as you obey Keybase T&C).

Keybase is a very friendly way to create a proven online profile, with additional features for securely messaging and collaborating.  However it is still a for-profit central authority and Keybase are likely building some kind of database of user activity, or finding some other way to make money out of this which you might not like.  In fact, Keybase is now owned by the public company Zoom 🚨.  There are indeed rumors that the Keybase team was "aquihired" by Zoom to help them with their security fiasco at the time, and there might not even be much future development of Keybase.  Additionally, the server side of Keybase is not open source, so cannot be completely trusted nor verified publicly (though its client apps are open source).

Keyoxide - Decentralized option

Keyoxide is an alternative to Keybase.  It is a bit more difficult to initially set up, requiring use of terminal commands 🤓. It is also self-custodial, completely open source and has the option to be decentralized, since anyone can host their own instance.  The most common instance you can use is keyoxide.org official.

The beauty of Keyoxide is that you own your own identity and can take it anywhere.  You can tie your identity to an email address and/or a public key fingerprint.  It is self-custodial so the private key is generated on your computer and stays on you computer (remember to back it up! > /home/username/.gnupg/), and is locally encrypted by a password (don't forget this password!), and you should never let anyone see your private key (keep it encrypted and don't upload anywhere, not even to Keyoxide!).  Even though it is self-custodial, worst case if you lose your private key files or password, you will just need to generate new ones and link up all your accounts and sites all over again.

Here is our friend Chuso again, who also has posted their same public key and a long list of proven accounts on Keyoxide 😎:

Only the bearer of the secret private key that matches the public key listed on the page will be able to update data on this page, and verify accounts against it - this is crytpographically guaranteed... not centrally dictated based on whether someone paid money.

I like how each verified account can be clicked on and details of how the account has been proven can be examined ☑️.  It is also possible to encrypt a message to send to this person, which only they can decrypt using their private key - though slightly less user friendly than Keybase DM's.  Additionally a cryptographically signed message that the person sent you can be verified using the Verify Signature button.  All of this without relying on a trusted central authority (though here we are still technically using one for convenience instead of self-hosting) nor custody.  Personally I went with Keyoxide as my preferred online identity proof as I am experienced enough to set it up.  If you click the verification icon at the top right of this page, you can see my keyoxide verified page.

How do you get started with Keyoxide?

The official website is not totally helpful to a newbie, though the docs are quite good and detailed for a more technical or patient person . I would recommend the simplest way to get into it is to use keyoxidizer, which is a wizard script for Unix systems that will securely create your private/public keys, and then walk you through getting all your accounts verified.  You can also use it to manage everything in the future by simply running the script again with your email address and password.  Once you have created the keys and uploaded, you can view or share your personal Keyoxide page by going to https://keyoxide.org/[your email address]. All of your verified accounts will be publicly listed here.

Also note that your keys have a set expiry time (usually recommended is 2 years), which you can choose when creating them.  It can later be renewed, but you need to remember to do this manually (good idea to set a calendar reminder).  The keyoxidizer tool will tell you about this when you create a key.

The keyoxidizer tool is a fast way to get into creating your proofs on Keyoxide, but it is currently limited to a small number of account types.  Here is a full list of supported accounts on Keyoxide.  Some require more complicated manual processes to add them so you will need to dive into the docs and perhaps look at using a tool like gpg or Kleopatra.

Bonus: Create a verified avatar image

A great way to create a verified avatar image that automatically shows up on your Keyoxide page, is to use libravatar - a more private and self-hostable alternative to Gravatar.  Simply create a libravatar account with the same email address as your Keyoxide account, upload an image and wait a few minutes till it shows up in your profile page.

  • Stadtwerke Rostock
  • Stadtwerke Langen
  • Stadtwerke Pinneberg
  • Stadtwerke Rastatt
  • Stadtwerke Elmshorn
  • Stadtwerke Bonn
  • Stadtwerke Ettlingen
  • Stadtwerke Bietigheim-Bissingen
  • Stadtwerke Nortorf
  • Energie und Wasser Wahlstedt/Bad Segeberg
  • Städtische Werke Spremberg
  • Städtische Werke Überlandwerke Coburg
  • SWS Stadtwerke Stralsund GmbH
  • WEMAG AG
  • Linz Gas

You have seen someone's Keyoxide profile like this one and now you want to create your own page just like that, including verifiable identities!

Eventually, there will be at least three methods to create such a profile, including using only an app on a phone! For now, there is only one method: using OpenPGP in the command line. Not very user-friendly, agreed, but if you have some patience and the will to experiment (or you are already tech-savvy), we can get there!

If you'd rather not play around with the command line, please stay tuned and keep an eye on the blog.

This guide is a more expanded version of the creating a profile on the Keyoxide documentation but contains the same steps and procedures.

Get your system ready

Regardless of whether you are using the Linux, Windows or macOS operating system, your computer will have a "terminal" or a "command line". You can start it as you start any other application, the only difference is there are no buttons, no nice graphics, just a big textbox waiting for your input. It may seem scary but it really isn't!

Next, we need one tool: GnuPG, also known as gpg. This is an application like any other, except it doesn't have a graphical interface, and thus can only be used with the terminal or command line.

On Linux, gpg is usually already installed, if not use your distribution's package manager.

On Windows, install Gpg4win from the offical website. It comes with Kleopatra but sadly, that graphical tool doesn't do what we need for Keyoxide. Luckily, it also install gpg for the terminal/command line.

On macOS, install GPGTools from the official website.

Once the tools are installed, open a new terminal or command line.

Generate a cryptographic key

If you already have an OpenPGP key, feel free to skip this chapter.

We use so-called cryptographic keys as the medium to create and distribute our online passports, as explained in the nontechnical introduction to Keyoxide. To be more precise, we will generate a cryptographic keypair that follows the OpenPGP standard. Because it is standardized, it will be easy for others to interact with your cryptographic key.

A keypair consists of a private key which you will keep secret and stored only on your computer and a public key that you will publish openly. The private key is used to issue yourself your online passport, the public key is used to distribute your online passport.

In the terminal that you have opened, run the following command:

gpg --full-gen-key --expert

Not to worry, the --expert flag will not make it more complicated, it just allows us to select a specific type of key, namely the Curve 25519.

Next, type 10 then press enter to select (10) ECC (sign only).

Next, type 1 then press enter to select (1) Curve 25519.

Great, now gpg knows what kind of key we want! Now, we need to set an expiration date. It is advisable to set an expiration date so that if you ever lose your private key, your online passport will invalidate itself after a certain period of time.

Of course, as long as you don't lose your private key, you will be able to keep moving the expiration farther in the future so it won't invalidate itself while you're still using it.

To set the expiration date two years later, type 2y and press enter. Confirm with y and press enter. Set a reminder in your calendar for one year later to update the expiration date. The procedure is explained below.

Next, you enter your name and press enter. Note that this may be your real name or your online pseudonym. Remember that for your online passport, you don't actually need to be known by your real name! This is cyber space, be who you want to be!

You also need to enter a valid email address. This one needs to be valid and actually exist, as you will receive an email to confirm your key.

Remember those future methods I told you will soon exist to create a profile? They won't need you to provide an email address! So if you'd rather not make your email address publicly known, please wait until the future methods are here.

You will also be asked for a comment. This one is optional so feel free to skip it if you don't feel like including an arbitrary message.

To confirm all your "personal" data is correct, enter O (as in, Okay) and press enter.

You will now be asked for a password. Obviously, it is strongly recommended to use a password, and a unique one at that, stored in a password manager. You will need the password every time you make a change to your online passport.

After this, you should be all done! You now have the medium to hold and distribute your online passport.

Your cryptographic key has a unique identifier, also called the fingerprint. To find it, in the terminal, run:

gpg -K

You should find one (or more) keys, find the one you just created which has the name and email address you entered a few minutes ago. Next to the line starting with sec, you should see a sequence of 40 characters that looks like 5DC026DDD293736A3B305F42B6558943003E6A70 but with different characters. That is your key's fingerprint, copy this becuase you will need it a couple of times in the following procedures.

Add identities to your cryptographic key

You have issued yourself your own online passport, congratulations! However, your passport is currently empty. You need to fill it with your online identities, your online accounts that you want to prove are yours.

To add an identity to your passport, you must perform two steps:

  1. link your online passport to your online account (i.e. the claim);
  2. link your online account to your online passport (i.e. the proof).

This creates a bidirectional link and is the concept that Keyoxide uses to prevent impersonation. Everyone can claim your online account, but only you can prove which claim is the true one!

Proving a Fediverse account

It may seem counterintuitive, but it's easier to first prove an identity, then claim it.

So, let's say we want to prove & claim an account on the Fediverse, for example on a Mastodon server. Log into your Mastodon account, go to Edit profile and add the following URI:

openpgp4fpr:FINGERPRINT

to either:

  1. one of your "metadata" links,
  2. your "about me" section.

Of course, you replaced FINGERPRINT with your own fingerprint, right? :) That first part openpgp4fpr: tells Keyoxide where to go looking for fingerprints.

That's it, you have linked your Mastodon account to your cryptographic key. In other words, you have "proved" one of your online identities. Now, let's claim it!

Claiming a Fediverse account

In the terminal (the same one, or a new one!), run:

gpg --edit-key FINGERPRINT

Again, replace FINGERPRINT with your own fingerprint.

Now, you write notation and press enter. gpg wants you to enter a notation, which is what we will use to put identity claims inside our online passports. One notation for each identity claim.

Write the following:

proof@ariadne.id=https://FEDIVERSE_SERVER/@USERNAME

Never change proof@ariadne.id=, this is a requirement by the people who invented and improved OpenPGP. You will have to replace FEDIVERSE_SERVER and USERNAME.

For example, the official Keyoxide project profile has the following notation:

proof@ariadne.id=https://fosstodon.org/@keyoxide

Press enter, and you should be asked for your password. Write save, press enter and you are done!

Your cryptographic key now links to your Mastodon acccount. You have "claimed" your online identity!

Uploading your online passport

Congratulations, you now have a fully functional online passport, including an identity claim and an identity proof waiting for someone to verify your identity claim!

But no one can access it yet. Not even Keyoxide. Your online passport only lives on your computer. So let's upload it to a public keyserver!

Public keyservers are services people can use to upload their public keys, and this is how we will publish our online passport. Remember that we are only uploading the public half of our cryptographic keypair, this half is meant to be shared publicly, every one can read it but it can't be used to alter your online passport.

Keyoxide strongly recommends to use keys.openpgp.org for uploading your public keys. It's fully open source and developed by some very smart people. There are other keyservers out there but they have some flaws that don't play nicely with Keyoxide.

If this is your first time uploading your key to keys.openpgp.org, you need to perform the following steps:

  1. In your terminal, run: gpg --armor --output public.asc --export FINGERPRINT;
  2. Using your OS' file manager, locate the public.asc file you have created in step 1;
  3. Go to keys.openpgp.org/upload and upload the public.asc file;
  4. Check the email address you entered when creating your key, it will receive a verification email, click on the link it contains.

Done! You can now visit keyoxide.org and search for your fingerprint or email address, both will work!

It may take up to an hour before your identity claim reliably shows the green tick.

There you go, you have created a Keyoxide profile! You can share your Keyoxide link with anyone and let them verify your claims for themselves.

Once you've done the whole email verification process, no need to ever go through these steps again (unless you add an email address). In the terminal, run:

gpg --keyserver hkps://keys.openpgp.org --send-keys FINGERPRINT

Done!

Setting your avatar

If you want to add an avatar to your profile, create an account on libravatar.org and associate a picture with the email address you used for your cryptographic key.

Using Keyoxide really gets interesting once you claim & prove more than one online account, as that is how you establish a unified online presence. One Keyoxide profile to link all your online identities!

Have a Twitter account? Claim and prove it. Have a personal website? Claim and prove it. Have a Reddit account? Claim and prove it.
